2021/2022 print schedule
BEFORE YOU SUBMIT, HERE'S SIX THINGS TO REMEMBER:
IS YOUR STORY CHARACTER-DRIVEN OR PLOT-DRIVEN?
Are your characters compelling, complex, and relatable? Does your plot move along at a great pace, keeping the reader interested along the way? Finding the right balance of character-driven and plot-driven elements can create a memorable and interesting story for the reader. If you find your story leans heavier towards one style over the other, that's okay too! Above all, it's important that you're telling the best story you can tell, in the best way you can tell it. These are the questions we ask ourselves when we review a submission and you should ask that of your work as well, before you submit.
WE DO NOT ACCEPT STORY IDEAS OR PITCHES WITHOUT ART
If you send a submission without fully completed pages (art, lettering, etc.) the submission will be deleted.
WE DO NOT PAY PAGE RATES FOR YOUR WORK
You receive an 80/20 profit split for each issue/graphic novel that sells.
PLEASE ONLY SUBMIT the first 5-8 COMPLETE PAGES (jpEg/pdf)
Please label your submission files as follows: TITLE_page1 ; TITLE_page2 ; etc.
Cover is preferred but not mandatory.
If you submit more than the first 8 pages, your submission will be automatically deleted.
No zip folders as well ... so please follow directions, thank you!
FAMILIARize yourself WITH THE BOOKS WE PUBLISH
With any publisher that you submit to, including our own, make sure you are familiar with their product line as much as possible before you decide to submit. Resist the urge to just submit to any open submissions call without first reading some of a potential publisher's books! Doing your due diligence will help you avoid disappointment and save time. If this is the first time you've ever heard of Alterna, that's fine! Welcome! But before you submit, make sure to read some of our books so you'll have a sense of what we publish. The quickest and easiest way to do that is to sign up for our newsletter (at the bottom of the site) where you'll receive a link to 5 free digital comics.
Due to the amount of submissions we receive, if you do not receive a response within two months, please consider the submission rejected. Generally speaking, we only have time to respond to submissions that are either accepted OR display potential and might be accepted if minor revisions are implemented.
Creators retain all rights to their intellectual property. The rights to produce, publish, and monetize merchandise, film, television, video game, etc. are all retained by the creator(s) of the work. Alterna will only own publishing and distribution rights of your comic/graphic novel to various comic book and book markets.
Book, Art, Story Quality
We look for titles that merge genres, are character-driven, and have stories that are immersed in a fictional world. We prefer metaphorical stories over literal ones and all genres are welcomed. Art and story must be of a professional quality. Before you submit, please compare your book's quality with other Alterna titles of similar genre. We reserve the right to suggest changes to title, logo, cover, or any other superficial element. No major changes will be made without creator approval.
For submission space purposes, JPEG or PDF please. Final file formats will be in either TIFF or PSD, 300 dpi, CMYK. Text needs to be on a separate layer in order for us to appropriately adjust the CMYK levels for print.
The minimum page count for a single issue story is 18 pages and the maximum is 90. The minimum page count for a graphic novel story is 60 pages and the maximum is 300.
We publish color and black and white comic books sized at 6.625 x 10.2 inches with a bleed size of 7.125x10.7 (a quarter inch bleed is needed for newsprint). Our graphic novels are sized at 6 x 9 inches with a bleed size of 6.25 x 9.25 and can also be in color or black and white.
Alterna handles all color separations and preparations for print, cover design layout elements (not cover image), size dimensions of the book, logo placements, spine on graphic novels, pricing, bar coding and more.
Single Issue Printing
Single issues print on newsprint with a glossy cover. For printed issue distribution, Alterna funds print runs and will recoup print and shipping costs on each sale.
Graphic Novel Printing
Graphic novels generally print on 70# matte coated paper stock, not glossy. Some will print on a premium uncoated stock. Covers are a 10pt or 12pt UV or Matte coated stock. For graphic novel printing, Alterna does not fund print runs. We recommend that creators fund their print runs with a crowdfunding campaign. Alterna will help you to promote and/or build your crowdfunding campaign as well. We have had a 100% success rate on crowdfunding since 2012, with over 20 campaigns successfully funded. Creators also receive a reimbursement on the print cost as their graphic novels sell. Example: if a graphic novel has a unit cost of $2 a piece (which is an average cost for the graphic novels we produce) then the creator will receive a $2 reimbursement per unit sold.
Our books are distributed worldwide in print and digital. We are distributed into the comics market with Diamond, the newsstand market with PDG, and the book trade and ebook trade with IPG. We also have digital distribution with comiXology and we sell and distribute books directly to readers and retailers as well.
Royalty payouts are on a quarterly schedule. Creators receive 80% of profits on all print and digital sales. If a creator pays for their print run (which generally does not occur for single issues but does occur for graphic novels), they will also receive a reimbursement per unit of sale.
Social Media Code of Conduct
You are required and encouraged to actively promote your title on social media.
We do not condone the use of block bots/block lists/blind blocking/block chains or any other kind of program or practice that is used to block thousands of people, blindly, en masse.
We acknowledge that unpleasant experiences through social media, sadly do occur, and creators can block/mute individuals if they have had those unwanted and poor experiences with them. But due to the fact that you would be part of a creative team at Alterna and a team of retailers would need to be able to confidently sell your comics to as many people as possible, we have adopted a policy that discourages the use of anything that would directly affect our stance of full inclusion for readers and creators. We have readers of all walks of life and it is paramount to us, that we encourage, promote, and stand by our mission statement that comics are for everyone.
As a creator, if you have poor experiences with anyone in relation to your work - online or otherwise - and feel that you are being threatened, please reach out to us and we'll do everything within our power to work with you on how to handle this situation.
We want all of our readers AND our creators to feel welcome.
Due to the amount of submissions we receive, we can only respond to submissions that we accept or submissions that require minor revisions. If you do not receive a response within two months of submitting, please consider your submission rejected. Thank you for understanding and we hope you still submit again in the future!
Please make sure to name your files in this manner:
