So the problem is solved now. When you have new alerts there is a button that appears to the top right of the notification page, labeled "Mark all as read". Click that and the notifications clear up.

It is great you enjoy it! Happy you found something you like. I bought volume one, but didn't really like it. The story dragged and the action didn't really feel impactful. Maybe the story telling style just didn't get along with my tastes? To each their own, I guess. I know the people who like this series really love it, so it surely has its audience.
