So, I recently bought the 1996 adaptation of 'The Phantom' for my little guy to check out. The current state of superhero comics is absolutely abysmal and crazily no place for a little boy, so I figured why not show him some older classic heroes that are actually, you know.... heroic. So, we watched it last night and he absolutely loved it and so did I. If you haven't watched it in awhile, or never watched it before, please go give it a watch. It holds up incredibly well and is an excellent adventure film, the kind that simply doesn't get made today.
So, all that leads to this. I'm asking for some suggestions as to other vintage heroes from back in the day that might be fun for us to check out. So far, I got The Rocketeer (which was a tough buy because its Disney) and I'm looking into getting Flash Gordon. Not sure how that's aged or whether he'd enjoy it. He watches the 1990's Conan cartoon and for what it is, it's rather enjoyable. I think The Shadow may be a bit too intense for a little kid, but if anyone knows of some Shadow content that's appropriate then I'm all ears.
So, what do you guys think? What vintage pulp heroes should we look into checking out?
Also -- more to the point of your topic -- maybe try The Lone Ranger (Clayton Moore) and Zorro (Guy Williams)?
Flash Gordon (1980) rocked my world as a kid. I loved it. Hopefully your kid does too!
I was 5 when I saw Robocop... which was probably not appropriate for me... but I loved that also. Haha
Transformers is on Tubi and so is the Ruby Spears SUPERMAN series that was short-lived. Pretty solid for a single season. I was a big fan of the Super Powers Galactic Guardians season. I feel like it was a precursor to Batman the Animated Series.
Would the TMNT (1990) movie be too much for him? Or even the Adam West Batman series?
All of those things defined my childhood in some way.
That's a great suggestion! I have very vague memories of Buck Rogers as a kid, but I looked into it and discovered that reruns are currently airing late night on MeTV. I'll set the DVR tonight and see how he likes it! Thanks for the recommendation Ben!
somewhat in the vein of Flash Gordon... What about Buck Rogers?
The lone Ranger and doc savage. Doc Savage is a must as far as pop heroes
Hmmmm. What about the old G.I. Joe cartoon?
