First and foremost, you retain 100% of your creative rights.  We only acquire publishing rights in order to get your book out there.  Merchandising and licensing? Well that's up to you too.  You can work with us to merchandise and license your related products OR you can go about it on your own, it's your choice!  Creators receive back-end royalty pay for their works (no page rates) and the profit split is 60/40 with 60% going to the creative team.  Alterna Comics also receives print cost back.  A simple break-down would go like this:  Your book has a cover price of $10.  It costs $2 to print.  Profit is $8.  If your book goes through distribution then profit is created AFTER the distribution cut.  If your book is sold directly at a convention, signing, or on the Alterna site, then profit would come out to $8.  That profit is then split 60% - to the creators - and 40% - to Alterna Comics. Creators are responsible for designating pay throughout their team, Alterna Comics is NOT responsible for dividing up payments.

Alterna Comics publishes black and white books that have color covers.  Our print runs vary from several hundred copies to a thousand or more copies of each book.  We also are nationally distributed through Diamond Comics Distributors (for comic shops and specialty retailers) and Partners Publishers Group (for bookstores, libraries, and schools).

Alterna Comics carries all kinds of books and is welcome to every genre; big and small.  We promote aggressively online and each creator promotes locally through signings, shows, and conventions.

So let us know what you plan on doing and if we sound like a place you want your book to call home!

Important Submission Tips

  • Do not waste your time and our time by not reading through our guidelines first.  All emails that we receive that are ASKING for our guidelines - please don't be surprised if you receive no response.  If you don't have the time to access that information on our site, then we don't have the time to direct you to it.
  • Don't send repetitive emails asking if we received your submission and what we thought of it.  Keep in mind that we can't get to every email on the exact day it is sent.  But we will DEFINITELY get back to you within the week.
  • We don't pair creative teams - so be ready with yours.  Small Press Publishers and Indie Publishers in general usually don't have any set "staff" or "in-house" writers/artists.
  • Sorry, but at the moment the ONLY way we can publish in color is if you, the creator(s), pay for 50% of the print cost.  This can lead into thousands of dollars, so if you aren't ready for that yet, then we apologize for the inconvenience.
  • Keep your submissions short and sweet! No one wants to read through an actual BOOK - that's why we're in the comics biz!
  • Evaluate yourself and show your work to other people like friends and family - FIRST!  Ask them key questions like: "What did you like about it?" "What do you think I can improve?" "Where would you like to see the next issue go?".  Most loved ones will only give criticism when they know you are OPEN to criticism.  And trust me - if you want to work in the comic business - you better be willing to hear criticism from anyone and everyone.
