Birth

story and art MICHAEL S. BRACCO

The extinction of two alien species at war -the Aquans and the Terans- is the beginning of an
unexpected bond. Michael S. Bracco writes and draws a fantastic epic of a planet where
death is necessary for BIRTH.

"Birth is a swift, smooth read."

What other books, if any, have you had published?
Birth was actually my first published work outside of a few small anthology pieces, unless you want to count the ATTY & MAX series I did and self published (thanks to the local Staples) back in college.  I’ve also done some work on the JHZ ‘franchise’ doing some pinups, cover work and anthology pieces and am now working on a brand new book called ADAM WRECK and the KALOSIAN SPACE PIRATES.

Name 5 of your favorite graphic novels/trades:
The Dark Knight returns – I’ll get the big cliché one over with first…This is the book that got me into comics.  Didn’t read it till I was 19.
Creature Tech – TenNapel is great at writing really fun stories based off of wonderfully ludicrous ideas, another good one is IRON WEST.
Y: The Last Man – I guess this is another common one to love but man this one knocked me on my butt.  Loved the whole series.
Ronin – I know, 2 Miller’s in the same list.  This book is just so damn innovative in how it visually tells a story
Cave-in – A book by another Baltimore artist that was one of the first ‘Indie’ books I ever bought.  It’s a beautifully simple story told with no words.

Which writer or artist has had the biggest influence on your work?
I’m sorry, its impossible to list one…
ARTISTS:      Jim Henson, Shel Silverstein, Doug TenNapel, Frank Miller, Geof Darrow, Mike Mignola, Dr. Seuss.
WRITERS:    J.K. Rowling Luc Besson, Frank Miller, Brian K Vaughn, Clint Eastwood.

If a movie were based on your book, who would be the star and which role would they play?
I like to think that if they ever made a movie out of my book it would be the most expensive movie ever made!  I have no idea who I’d want to be in it but I know who I’d like to have direct it:  Either old school Terry Gilliam or Spike Jones.

If you could do anything in the world for a living, what would it be (aside from comics)?
I would love to be a character designer for movies.  I also have a pipe dream of being a (don’t laugh) folk singer some day.
